Are you Mad?

Not crazy. . . but angry?  The business marketplace is a pressure-cooker.  Our personal lives are often very stressful as well.  All this stress can sometimes lead to behavioral reactions that surprise us—we never knew we could behave that way, or think those thoughts.  We see people of all ages blaming their often incredible reactions on anger.  “I was so mad I could not even think” is actually TRUE.  Allowing anger to take over blocks one’s ability to think  rationally.

Did you ever hear a friend or client say, “Well, I would never had reacted that way if he/she/you had not done this or that?”  People want to blame their anger and their resultant behavior on someone or something else:  a broker, a buyer, a seller, an attorney, a spouse, a child, or maybe just a rude driver in awful metro traffic.  We may actually think of that event or person as the source of the anger.  This is not true.  No one or no thing is the source or OUR anger.  It comes from within us.  We choose to give vent to our own anger.  We choose our own behaviors.

Dr. Sam Peeples has been quoted as saying  "The circumstances of life, the events of life, and the people around me in life, do not make me the way I am, but reveal the way I am. . . .  A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control. (Proverbs 29:11)”   I have in my office the “Attitude” sign, as I call it,  and I have noticed it in many of my clients’ offices as well.  Charles Swindoll  wrote “I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me, and 90% how I react to it.  And so it is with you. . . . We are in charge of our attitudes.”

Outbursts of anger can be likened to the red warning lights on your car dash.  They are not the problem.  They are the indicator that there may be a serious problem with one of the critical systems that keep your vehicle running at top performance.  You know that you ignore them at your own risk.  You know that it is your responsibility to investigate the source of the problem triggering the warning light.  So it is with angry behaviors.  You ignore the signal at your own peril.  If you are angry, it would benefit you and all those around you to take the time and make the effort to discover the core issue within yourself that is the true source of that anger.   Most anger is linked to fear—fear of failure, of rejection, of not getting what we believe we are entitled to, and often a fear of the unknown.

If you have fears related to your career in business brokerage, the industry offers many support systems to ease the fear of the unknowns ahead.  Take advantage of all that your state associations, commercial boards, and national associations offer to make you more professional and effective with your clients.  The structure is here to help you with your continuing education, keep you on top of changes that will affect you, and provide many opportunities for networking with true professionals who can keep some of the pressure off you as you navigate the many difficult situations inherent in this marketplace.  http://www.bizilla.com/blog/2009/11/are-you-mad/

Building with the goal of selling

When an entrepreneur launches a company, the ultimate goal of the owners may not be immediately clear – to the company or to themselves. Do the owners eventually want to sell the company? Do they want to build something that can revolutionize the market? Or do they merely want to make a living?Writing in , veteran entrepreneur Norm Brodsky suggests – regardless of their ambitions – entrepreneurs should build businesses as if they will eventually be sold.

“The point is that building to sell will lead you to ask a lot of questions you should be asking anyway but don’t because you’re focused on the day-to-day, month-to-month challenges of running a company,” he writes.
Those questions deal mainly with the market, such as how competitors are pricing or running their operations or what the gross margins of products are and how they affect revenue and profit.
A number of recent studies have projected the business sales market will improve in 2011.

http://www.bizilla.com/blog/2011/02/building-with-the-goal-of-selling/When it does, small companies should prepare themselves for selling a business, because even if they do not intend to sell, their competitors may. In addition, you never really know what you’ll do until there is a buyer standing in front of you holding out a tidy check.

A few notes on professional business brokers when selling a company

When the time comes, selling a business is really about a series of decisions.
How much is the business worth? How do you go about valuating the business? What type of organization might be interested in buying or at least investing in the company? How should one go about finding such prospects?

While these decisions are made mostly on a case-by-case basis, one aspect of the overall acquisition process is usually the same: the decision of whether or not to hire a business broker.
Business brokers are a valued asset during the transaction process in that they can call upon their range of experiences, connections and professional networks to ensure that the company is afforded the best possible advice, valuation and deal in selling the business.

Still, there are some things to know before you hiring a business broker. For one, they usually charge about 10 percent of the final transaction price and may even incur additional fees later on in the process. For this reason, it is a good idea to determine what the overall cost will be, even establishing a contract to adhere to.  ”In general, the more a business is worth, the more leverage the seller has when negotiating the broker’s commission and fee,” writes AllBusiness.com.

“If you’re selling a larger business – particularly one worth more than $ 1 million – you may want to consider using a business broker who is a mergers and acquisitions specialist.”

The dual motivations of an entrepreneur and their relation to happiness

The original intentions of launching a business are often indicated by two basic motivations: to create a new and innovative product or service, and to build a company for the purpose of making a living or strong profits. Both have their ups and downs.

The former is akin to an artist's approach, wherein an entrepreneur's vision can be instrumental in building a revolutionary and highly innovative company, but the emotional attachments with which these individuals operate can make them stubborn and unwilling to relinquish power. The latter motivation is more business- or profit-oriented – a strategy that will surely benefit the company's bottom line, but it may also limit the amount of financial risks or creative gambles that the owner is willing to take.

Whatever one's motivation, it is important to determine how much they are emotionally attached to their business creation and how much their own happiness depends on running the company. When selling a business, a strikingly easy way to figure this out is to merely consider the level of pride one has for his or her career.

"One of the biggest reasons we become unhappy is that we fall out of sync with our deepest personal values," author Gretchen Rubin told Inc. magazine. "Recalling your pastimes before all of the pressures of adulthood took over gives you clues as to what will make you happy now."

Five tips for starting a small business in 2011 | Recent News/Blog

Five tips for starting a small business in 2011 | Recent News/Blog

Identifying excellence in a professional business brokerage firm shouldn’t be difficult. Take, for example, the following criteria:

* Proven track record of successful business closings
* High closing ratios
* Ready access to buyers and sellers, both nationwide and internationally
* Systems and processes to match buyers and sellers
* Highly experienced and credentialed business brokers
* Unsurpassed standards of business ethic
* Membership in all significant industry associations, group listing services, multiple listing services and brokerage networks

Founded in 1994 by Roger J. Murphy, Murphy Business & Financial Corporation meets these criteria. As a result, the firm has become one of the largest and most successful business brokerage firms in North America, with offices conveniently located throughout the United States and Canada.

Members of the Murphy team have been carefully recruited and selected for their high level of achievement as former CEOs, CFOs, CPAs, business owners and senior level executives in a wide range of industries and professions. But their accomplishments don’t stop with their prior experience. Our business brokers receive intensive training, ongoing support and many have subsequently received the highest awards, credentials and designations in our industry.

We invite you to learn more about Murphy’s approach to the business brokerage profession. We hope to demonstrate how we provide both clients and professional partners with the highest standards of professional service and unmatched performance in the sales of privately held businesses, mergers, machinery and equipment sales, sales and re-sales of franchise businesses, commercial real estate transactions, business valuations, acquisitions and business consulting.
